Playa Mujeres lies on the island of Isla Mujeres, which is located about eight miles off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. It is a great destination for those who want to experience the beauty of this region outside the nearby tourist-saturated city of Cancun. Isla Mujeres is a small, thin island measuring just five miles in length and half a mile in width at its widest point. It has retained its beauty, tranquility, and local charm despite recent tourist development. Whether you’re looking for one destination in Mexico to visit on a short vacation, or a stop on a backpacking trip around Mexico, Isla Mujeres is a great destination. Below are some tips to keep in mind.
1. Choose the Timing Thoughtfully
When planning a trip to Playa Mujeres, weather is the most important factor to consider. Just like the rest of the region, the island has a wet and dry season.
The summer months of May to September are the warmest, with average highs of around 88 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures are lowest in the winter from December to February, when highs hover around 81 to 82 degrees. Since the island is the driest in winter, this is the peak tourist season. Most visitors try to avoid the wet and humid summer weather, but if you don’t mind the heat and rain, you can save a lot by getting the best deals on accommodations. However, note that June to November is hurricane season.
2. Travel Independently
Although the convenience of all-inclusive vacations is tempting, independent travellers can easily visit Isla Mujeres on a budget. This is a great way to not only save money, but also be more adventurous and have a more authentic local experience without being confined to a resort. You can find a cheap flight to Cancun and then take a ferry to Isla Mujeres from Puerto Juarez. There are a number of cheap hotels in Playa Mujeres to choose from, such as Casa Ixchel and Hotel Marcianito.
3. Prepare for an Underwater Adventure
The waters around Isla Mujeres are filled with beautiful coral reefs and varied marine life, making this a popular snorkelling and scuba diving destination. If you’re already a certified scuba diver, make sure to bring your certification card with you to take advantage of the many amazing dive options. If you’re not certified yet, Delfin Diving – a diving centre located on Isla Mujeres – offers PADI certification courses, as well as wreck dives, reef dives, and trips to the MUSA underwater sculpture park. Isla Mujeres is also a great spot to dive with sailfish and whale sharks – the gentle giants of the sea.
Note that if you’re staying at one of the hotels in Cancun, you can go on an organized day trip to Isla Mujeres to experience the beauty of the island. You can take a tour that goes to Garrafon National Park on the island, go snorkelling with whale sharks in the waters around it, visit the underwater sculpture museum, or experience a dolphin encounter.
